Guelphspeaks editor Gerry Barker and his wife Barbara attended a meeting with William Molson, CA, Wednesday, August 5. They were asked to answer questions and discuss the GrassRoots Guelph Voters Association Inc’s (GRG) role in donating $400 to Glen Tolhurst’s 2014 election campaign.
On behalf of GRG, the Barkers acknowledged that GrassRoots Guelph donated the $400 to Mr. Tolhurst.
Mr. Molson is the auditor hired by the city, to conduct the audit as requested by the Compliance Audit Committee (CAC). Activist Susan Watson, applied for the audit challenging the right of Tolhurst to receive a donation from a third party, i.e. GRG.
The Barkers were summoned by Molson to respond to a series of questions and a demand for providing corporate documents and records of GRG. Following a lengthy discussion, the demand for producing the GRG corporate documents was withdrawn. The only exception was producing copies of the invoices paid for advertising in the Guelph Tribune before the 2014 civic election.
On behalf of the corporation, Barker said he would consult members of the steering committee. There was agreement to release the 2014 Tribune invoices to the auditor.
Mr. Molson indicated that receiving the advertising numbers would allow him to complete his report to the CAC.
The next meeting of the CAC is in September at which time it is anticipated it will make a recommendation to city council regarding the Susan Watson complaint.
